The Flammulated Owl Project is a Summer Collaborative Research Project headed by Professor of Organismal Biology & Ecology Brian Linkhart — the foremost, if not the only, flammulated owl expert in the world — and his dedicated "Flam Crew" — Colorado College students who spend the summer living in the Manitou Experimental Forest researching the effects of climate change on breeding flammulated owls. This research is a continuation of Linkhart's work as an undergraduate student, making the 40-year study the longest, most in-depth study of the birds worldwide. CC's TREE (Teaching and Research in Environmental Education) Semester is a 16-week, residential semester program where undergraduate students live in a sustainable community and learn experientially by teaching environmental education in the montane forest at the Catamount Mountain Campus outside Woodland Park, CO. The TREE Semester is for students of all academic interests. Participants cultivate their (and their K-12 students') conceptions of environmental stewardship and respect for the natural world through almost 100 hours of experiential teaching. The program is one of only nine accredited environmental education programs in North America, and one of only two such undergraduate programs in the country. CC studio art major Quang Vu ’18 shares about his experience working with visiting faculty member and artist Ralph Allen. Vu assisted Allen with a mural for the Fine Arts Center that coincided with “The Art of Haiti: Loss, History, and Memory” exhibit. These serious players immersed themselves, CC-style, in bluegrass, working with Grammy-nominee and Mandolin Player of the Year Sierra Hull and Nashville guitarist/singer/producer Jeff White.
